Independent Living communities, also known as Retirement Communities are for the more active independent seniors that are 55 and older. Some are like hotels with grand entrances and vary in size, number of units and amenities. They offer studio, full size one and two bedroom apartments with full size kitchens and appliances. Some units are furnished, but mainly residents bring their own furniture and personal belongings. Some apartments are barrier free and handicap accessible. They have emergency pull cords in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Some have beautiful views of the grounds of the community and are beautifully landscaped.
There are large dining rooms (some formal) for the residents meals and are usually served restaurant style with daily specials. There are designated areas throughout the community for activities and events that are planned monthly. Spacious common areas for visitors and family, some have private dining rooms for the family to enjoy a meal together. Transportation is offered free of charge with their shuttle service within a 10 mile radius and designated parking and carports are available. Most communities have small chapels or designated areas for religious ceremonies of all denominations. Some provide physical therapy on site and physical fitness programs.
The residents in independent living are more active and require minor care which can be provided to them by a care company that is on site. The care companies can provide assistance with medications, showers, dressing and minor care services for the residents. All care charges would be in addition to their rent charges monthly. There are no nurses on site. Some have visiting physicians for their residents.
